I never had any intention of writing or being a writer. And that is how I became a writer.

While working in an office as an EMS Training Coordinator, I was asked to write a newsletter piece on a new medical device. I didn’t think much of it, really. I didn’t spend hours crafting and sweating over the keyboard. I wrote as if I were conversing with someone. Naturally and completely unintentional. I later came to realize that this was the key to writing things that people wanted to read.

My goodness did that ever open the floodgates. There was praise on the local level and the article got picked up nationally. It took me completely by surprise and provided me with the incentive to dabble even more.

That 250 word article led to writing gigs for everything from educational textbooks and materials to writing test questions for a national licensing examination, to ultimately editing and producing a newsletter for a national EMS educator organization.

So off I went. Writers write. And that was me. I felt like I had a lot to say about writing. I also caught the fiction bug and produced quite a few stories in what is known as “Flash Fiction” format – that is to say stories told in 1000 words or less. I’m looking forward to contributing some of these to the “Hood.” I went through a circle of Hell Dante never considered – known by fellow writers as National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Yep, write a novel in a month. Madness I tell you, madness.

I kept a writing blog and worked full-time as a freelance writer. Generally not as sexy as it sounds. Oh sure, there were fun things like getting an article published in Alaska magazine but things like that were punctuation marks in a litany of Search Engine Optimized (SEO) articles. Even now my brain hurts at the thought. Usually 10 short pieces using a keyword peppered generously throughout the articles. Doesn’t sound too bad, right? Yeah. 10 unique 500 word articles using the keyword “potty training” a dozen times. Or “Home Equity Loan.”

And that is what is was like for a few years. Over time my muse took more and more vacations.

Eventually, she stopped sending me even postcards.

When Modesty introduced me to Little Red Rotten Hood, I spent some time looking through the site, and the gentle tapping on my shoulder turned out to be my muse who then whispered sweet nothings in my ear. I’ve learned to pay attention, so here I am. I’m excited to be here and to be welcomed so warmly by Modesty and Sparky.
