For those of you that are writers, writers in training or genuine wanna-be writers, let these commandments guide you on your journey.

  1. Thou Shalt Write – Every day without fail. This, above all else is what makes you a writer.
  2. Thou Shalt Not Steal – If you put your name on it, it better be yours. At no time in the history of writing has it been easier to plagiarize. Tempting as it may be, don’t do it.
  3. Thou Shalt Respect your Reader – Muddy, complicated, unclear writing is an offense that readers will be loathe to forgive. Rightfully so.
  4. Thou Shalt Be Accurate – No excuse for not being absolutely accurate these days. Writer, do your research. Check your sources and then cross-check them.
  5. Thou Shalt Follow The Rules – If you are submitting manuscripts for publication, follow all of the submission guidelines. To the letter. No exceptions.
  6. Thou Shalt Not Write For Free – Charity or writing for a friend excluded, you shall never write a free “sample” for a company looking to hire a writer for mere pennies per word. You shall have pride in yourself and the profession and you shall make a stand against this kind of tyranny that is keeping writer pay artificially low.
  7. Thou Shalt Proof Thy Work – Never ever publish or submit until you have taken the time to check your work. That side of the street is already being worked by millions of hacks.
  8. Thou Shalt Develop Thine Own Style – Influences are great, but never try to write like a particular author. At best, your attempts will be transparent. At worst, laughable.
  9. Thou Shalt Pay Attention To Grammar and Spelling – You are a writer and are held to a higher standard than most. Sorry, that’s just the way it is.
  10. Thou Shalt Not Give Up – Play the game. The object is to keep at it longer than anyone else.

  1. I think… therefore I write. I write… therefore I drink. I drink because I must rewrite.
    uggghhh…uuhhhhmmm…I’ve redlined the wisdom meter!

PS: If you love to read, you’ll love to write. If you love to write you’ll love to read. If you love neither… welcome to Ozymandias.

  2. Nice Reggie. Well stated and to the point. I don’t consider meself a writer. More of a story teller.
